A short drive from Lubec, Maine along the Lubec Channel takes you to West Quoddy Head State Park and the West Quoddy Head Light. This lighthouse is the easternmost lighthouse in the United States. The light is an operating light facing the Quoddy channel dividing the United States from Canada. Across the channel is Grand Manan Island of New Brunswick. There is a visitor center with historical displays and a small gift shop operated by the lighthouse association. The center is open from mid May to mid October. Check their website for specific dates and hours of operation.
The lighthouse itself is a sight not to be missed and the park has several hiking paths which afford opportunities to observe a great variety of wildlife depending on the time of year. A visit here could take a while if you head out on one of the trails. And really, if you’ve gone as far as Lubec you really shouldn’t miss a stop here.
Information on the state park can be found here or you can visit the State’s official website can be found here.
