If you love chocolate, and you’re in Freeport, be sure and stop at Wilbur’s. Two
school teachers started the business as a candy store around 1983 and not long after decided to start making their own chocolate specialties with distinctive Maine twist like chocolate Moose, chocolate Lobsters, and chocolate covered blueberries. If your taste runs to more standard choices you will not be disappointed with the selection. My favorite is the Milk Chocolate Pecan Turtle and I can’t leave the store without carrying a couple home.
With few exceptions, the small factory produces all the chocolate items you see in the retail store. If you’re interested in seeing how it’s made they offer a tour that covers the history of the business and allows you to see the production in process. The tour includes lots of samples and culminates with the making two chocolate covered Oreos for each person to take with. Their little factory produces at least 4,000 pounds of chocolate items each week and during the busy times of the year significantly increases production by adding weekend and evening shifts. The tours do not run every day but dates and times are posted to their online calendar.
You can find more information about Wilbur’s on their website and can place orders on line if you cannot visit in person.

Pecan turtles are one of my favorites! The last few photos are reminding me of the chocolate factory episode of I Love Lucy, haha.
I had to Google that episode of I love Lucy, what a hoot. Thanks for sharing.
