You never know what you might run into on a drive through rural Maine. Recently, driving west from Freeport thru Newry to visit the Step Falls Preserve and Screw Auger Falls Gorge in Grafton Notch State Park, we came across the Puzzle Mountain Bakery. It’s a roadside stand along Bear River Road – Highway 26. There’s no nearby store and no people watching the store.
I’d heard about such things but never found one before this trip. They offer a good selection of truly homemade pies, cookies, jams, Whoopee Pies, and other things I’ve probably forgotten. We picked up a Blueberry Pie, two Whoopee Pies, and some jam. Everything was fresh and delicious.
It’s cash only so after you’ve totaled your purchase you just deposit the cash into the locked, heavy, large metal can next to the tree across the drive. If you pass this way, bring cash and give it a try.
I would love to try one of these pies someday!
